The Problem

He's home. So why does it still feel like a deployment?

The return home runs in stages. His stages and her stages do not line up the way you expect, and when nobody names them, each of you starts believing the other one is the problem.

The Map

The five stages of the return

One calendar. Two experiences of the same season. Here is the whole cycle the briefing walks through, stage by stage.

01

Pre-Deployment

Stress and confusion. The family doesn't understand why their person has to leave.

From his chair
He is already halfway out the door in his head. Focus narrows to the mission. Pulling back can look like pulling away.

From her chair
She is running the math on the months ahead and quietly taking over everything he used to carry, before he has even left.

02

Deployment

Loss, grief, fear. New routines without them. The family fills the gaps.

From his chair
His world gets simple and hard at the same time. Home becomes pictures, calls, and whatever fits in a care package.

From her chair
She becomes the whole house: bills, kids, repairs, holidays, and the waiting. Competence goes up. So does the load nobody sees.

03

Sustainment

The long middle. Life reshapes around the absence.

From his chair
He hears about a life that kept moving without him. Pride and displacement arrive in the same phone call.

From her chair
She finds her rhythm and her people. The house works. That is the part nobody warns either of them about.

04

Reunion

Anticipation and anxiety. Everyone has changed during the time apart.

From his chair
He walks back into a house that has new rules, new routines, and kids who have grown into different people.

From her chair
She gets her partner back and loses the system that kept her standing, in the same weekend. Relief and grief share a room.

05

Reintegration

Re-entering family roles. Mixed emotions.

From his chair
He has to find his place in a house that learned to run without him, without taking it as a verdict on his worth.

From her chair
She has to hand back pieces she carried alone, without handing back her voice. That trade is harder than it sounds.

This is where most couples in the room are living.

The expectation to slot back in is where it breaks.

The five stages of the deployment cycle (O'Neal, 2022), as laid out in Nick's research paper, The Homecoming.

In One Hour

What you leave with

01

Your stage, located.

Which of the five stages your house is in, named out loud.

02

Your pattern, named.

The loop that runs your hardest nights, its trigger, and its exit.

03

Your conversation, opened.

The first talk to have this week, and the sentence to open it with.

One hour, live. No charge.

The Method

The Five R's: how you work the map

The stages are the terrain, where the challenge happens. The Five R's are the method, how you move through it. This is Nick's framework.

1  →

Recognize

Name the stage your house is actually in. Not the one you wish you were in.

2  →

Reveal

Say the quiet part out loud, in words your partner can actually hear.

3  →

Reframe

Move the problem from each other to the stage you are standing in.

4  →

Remap

Agree on what this stage asks of each of you, and what it does not.

5

Realign

Run the house on the same map again. Roles, rhythm, expectations.

Nick Walters

Nick Walters. Navy veteran. Resident in Counseling in Virginia. In 2021 he lost seventy pounds, had panic attacks in private, and went silent in his own house.

His wife Roberta said four words: I need you here. He got help, then studied the thing that almost took his house. This briefing is that research, translated.

“I need you here.”
